Oxnard Police Officer Killed In Off-Duty Crash

Friday, February 14, 2020

Motorcycle accidents can be devastating for victims. Unfortunately, they often lead to serious injuries or fatalities for those involved. At The Law Offices of J. Jeffrey Herman, we want to discuss a recent motorcycle crash that claimed the life of an off-duty area police officer. Our Oxnard motorcycle accident lawyers are here to help if you or a loved one have been injured in a crash that was caused by another person’s negligence. These incidents can lead to tremendous medical bills that you should not be on the line for.

What Happened In This Oxnard Motorcycle Crash?

We are sad to report that the Oxnard police department is mourning the loss of one of their own. On January 29, 2020, one of their officers was killed in an off-duty motorcycle crash. The incident happened around 4 p.m. in the area of Third Street and Campton Drive.

The victim, Officer Nathan Martin, was a 45-year-old Oxnard police officer. He was on his personal motorcycle driving home from the station after work when a semi-truck turned left in front of him, according to Oxnard Police Chief Scott Whitney.

Chief Whitney said that “Several of the first responders on the scene were close personal friends of Officer Martin and are obviously devastated.”

The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the incident.

Officer Martin was a 20-year veteran of the department. He is survived by his wife, Marita, and three children. His brother is also an officer with the department.

Motorcycle Accidents Can Be Devastating

Motorcyclists do not have very much protection from the force of a vehicle slamming into them. Even when a motorcyclist is wearing a helmet, there is still a high probability that they will sustain serious injuries. Our Oxnard motorcycle accident lawyers commonly help clients who have sustained the following:

  • Head injuries/traumatic brain injuries
  • Internal organ damage or internal bleeding
  • Spinal cord trauma (possible paralysis)
  • Broken or dislocated bones
  • Severe lacerations or road rash

In many cases, motorcycle crashes occur because of the negligence of other drivers around them. In the case above, Officer Martin slammed into a truck when the vehicle made a left turn in front of him. While we do not know the outcome of this investigation, we do know that this could very well end up being the fault of the other driver.
